Arnont Nongyao – Water Cave

Water Cave

Water Cave is an installation by Arnont Nongyao, displayed in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2011. It uses dripping water to strike objects and make sounds as it falls to the ground, much like a dripping in a cave. The system seems very straight forward, and simply utilizes hoses hung from the ceiling to dispense water at a slow rate. Objects have then been positioned in the line of the dripping and seem to create a static, unmodulated sound field.

In my view, this work lacks artistic and conceptual inspiration, as neither the sounds produced by the piece or the overlaying aesthetic seem well planned or even intentional. The title of the piece suggests a natural setting, yet the objects in the room rather speaks of a residential or at least a space occupied by humans.
